  • HAS GEAR HUGGER BEEN TESTED FOR SAFETY?

Yes. Safe to say, Gear Hugger has undergone 3rd party testing to ensure safety and stability of the container and ingredients.

  • WHAT ARE PTFEs?

PTFE, or Polytetrafluoroethylene, is a synthetic polymer that is often used as a lubricant due to its hydrophobic and low-friction properties. PTFE is toxic because it contains a carcinogenic substance called PFOA. PTFE-coated surfaces can emit chemical byproducts when heated, which are especially dangerous to birds and can lead to PTFE toxicosis.

  • WHY IS PETROLEUM BAD?

Petroleum is a crude oil and a fossil fuel. It occurs naturally in geologic layers and can be refined into oil and fuel. Petroleum combustion releases polluting gases and high amounts of CO2, a dangerous greenhouse gas that contributes heavily to global warming. Petroleum is a non-renewable source of energy, so we will eventually run out.

  • HOW DOES PLANT-BASED OIL WORK?

Vegetable oil is an excellent lubricant, since it has a naturally occuring lubrication film. The molecules slide against each other easily, reducing the friction between surfaces. It also acts as a vehicle to easily mix other ingredients, is packed with antioxidants, and has good stability properties. Go plants!

  • WHAT DOES 96% BIO-BASED MEAN?

Bio-based means that a product is derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine and forestry materials. The USDA evaluated and certified that 96% of the Gear Hugger formula ingredients are renewable and from plants, vs. non-renewable like most petroleum-based products. Plants are the primary biobased resource that we use to make Gear Hugger.

SUSTAINABILITY

  • WHAT IS GEAR HUGGER'S STANCE ON SUSTAINABILITY?

We are working towards being as sustainable as possible. We source renewable, plant-based resources for our formula instead of petroleum-based ingredients. The Gear Hugger can is recyclable and we use minimal plastics and virgin materials.

  • HOW DO I RECYCLE THE CAN?

To recycle the Gear Hugger can, remove the nozzle and recycle the metal can where available.

  • IS GEAR HUGGER ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

Gear Hugger is much kinder to the environment than traditional petroleum-based lubricants. When you use lubricant on your gear, some of it ends up on the ground. If your lube is petroleum based, PTFEs and harmful chemicals will seep into the ground water and can cause harm to plants, animals and the environment. See more about PTFE and Petroleum above.
