A Green Farewell

Día de los Muertos and the Death of Petroleum

Día de los Muertos is a beautiful time to look back, remember those we've lost, and really celebrate life. This year, we're using that spirit to say a final, unapologetic goodbye to something we definitely won't miss: petroleum.

For as long as many of us can remember, petroleum-based products were the standard. Need to silence a squeaky door? Loosen a stubborn bolt? Clean up a mess of grease? You reached for the toxic stuff. Sure, it got the job done, but it also meant filling your home with nasty fumes and leaving behind chemicals that pollute our planet.

At Gear Hugger, we decided we'd had enough of that compromise. We believe you shouldn't have to choose between a clean bike chain and a clean environment. That’s why we created our line of plant-powered lubricants, degreasers, and rust protectors. They work just as well—and often better—than the old chemical standbys, but without any of the toxic junk. They’re safe for your hands, your kids, your pets, and the earth we all share.

Honoring the Shift: Building Your Eco-Altar

This Día de los Muertos, we’re honoring the "death" of petroleum with an altar that celebrates clean living and the small changes that truly matter. You can join us by building your own eco-friendly ofrenda (altar):

  1. Keep it Simple & Re-Use: Instead of buying new decorations, root through your house for what you already have. A few candles, some flowers, and personal items are perfect.
  2. Go Natural: Choose authentic, sustainable touches like real marigoldssoy candles, and paper banners made from recycled materials.
  3. Add Meaning to the Moment: Place something on your altar that symbolizes change and progress. It could be an old, cleaned-out oil can with a hopeful little plant growing out of it, or even a Gear Hugger can as a symbol of the future we’re building.
  4. Share the Story: Once your altar is set, snap a photo and tell your friends and followers why you're ready to say goodbye to petroleum for good.

Our altar is simple—just bright colors, warm, flickering candlelight, and a powerful reminder: we can absolutely care for our gear and hobbies without causing harm to the world around us.

This Día de los Muertos, let's celebrate a cleaner, greener future together. Goodbye, petroleum. Hello, plant power!
