Athlete Spotlight WITH HER BARE HANDS

At 5:20 AM on May 20, 2026 — Laura González stood on top of the world. For the third time.

8,848m · 3× Everest summits · 30 years since Yuri's first ascent

THE STORY

This wasn't a record attempt. It was a love letter delivered at the highest address on Earth.

Thirty years ago, Laura's husband Yuri stood on the summit of Everest for the first time. He was the one who taught her to dream in altitude  to look at something impossible and decide it was worth trying. One year after losing him, Laura went back to the mountain with the last of his ashes and left them where his story began.

"In that privileged place, at 8,848 meters, there was a moment where we were together just him and me." — Laura González, May 20, 2026

THE CLIMB

May 16-  Departed base camp direct to Camp II May 18 - Camp III, 7,200m. The air thins. The doubt grows. May 19, 7PM - South Col, 7,900m. The final push begins. May 20, 5:20AM - Summit. 8,848m. Third time. First time alone with Yuri.

THE MOMENT SHE ALMOST STOPPED

Near the South Summit  an hour and a half from the top, Laura nearly turned back. The altitude, the exhaustion, a crash in blood sugar. Her sherpa Chebbie and team lead Jen Jen Lama stepped in with an energy gel and steadied her. She kept going. As first light hit the final ridge, she reached the top.

It was the busiest summit day of the season. 270 other climbers reached the peak that day. But for one moment up there, it was just Laura and Yuri.

THIS IS WHAT "BARE HANDS" MEANS. Not just strength. Grief. Love. One more step.

BUILT FOR PEOPLE LIKE LAURA

At Gear Hugger, bare hands isn't about going without equipment. It's about what drives you when everything else is stripped away, when the summit is one and a half hours out, your legs are giving, and you're climbing for someone who can no longer climb with you.

That's the person we build for. Laura, congratulations from everyone at Gear Hugger.

Built for adventure. Built for those who never stop climbing.
